The Macedonian film “Willow” – nominee for “European Oscar”

As announced by the European Film Academy (EFA), the film “Willow” by the Macedonian film director Milcho Manchevski is part of the selection for best film 2020 at the 33rd European Film Awards, also known as the “European Oscar”.

This year, 38 films are competing and by voting of over 3800 members of the academy five nominations will be selected, in five categories: best film, director, actor, actress and screenplay.

The nominations will be announced on November 7 at the festival in Seville, Spain, and the awards will be presented on December 12 in Berlin, Germany.

The film is a story about three mothers. The main roles are played by Sara Klimoska as Donka, Natalija Teodosieva as Rodna and Kamka Tocinovski as Katerina. The film is directed by Milcho Manchevski, who is also the author of the script. The film was produced by “Banana Film”, the producer of the film is Jane Kortoshev, the director of photography is Tamash Dobosh, the costumes are work of Zaklina Krstevska and Gjergji Sakac, the music is by Kiril Dzajkovski, and the casting director is Milka Anchevska.

After its premiere in October 2019, “Willow” broke the viewership record in Macedonia and beyond. “Willow” is the winner of “Manuel de Oliveira” Award at Fantasporto in Porto, the best film award in Wellington, New Zealand, and we have seen the premiere at numerous festivals, such as the Rome Film Festival, where it left with positive reviews, the Beijing Film Festival, Sarajevo, Istanbul, the Film Festival FEST in Belgrade, Bengaluru in India and many others.

“Willow” is not the first Macedonian film to enter the selection for the European Film Awards. In 2011, the film “Mothers” was selected, which is also directed by Milcho Manchevski and the film “Honeyland” in 2019.
